About Me

Rebecca Smith Refinery29.jpg

Hi, I am Rebecca. I use community building and storytelling to amplify marginalized voices and create a future where technology benefits society.

I am part storyteller, part strategist and part operational and people leader. Currently, I am the Director of Communications at Mozilla, leading the editorial, video, social and North America marketing teams. I work across organic, paid, experiential, community and earned marketing tactics to drive awareness and growth to our brand and various products. I tell innovative stories about our products and how the internet shapes our lives.

Prior to working at Mozilla, I was the Vice President, Editorial Operations & Strategy at Vice Media Group, where I managed operations across three North American newsrooms including editorial, branded, social referral, newsletter, and content strategy teams. Previously, I spent eight years at Refinery29 across various positions all focused on editorial and distribution strategies. I worked on award-winning content, hired amazing people, and created and led SEO strategies that grew search traffic 400%.

I've interviewed survivors in Hiroshima, traveled solo through Europe, danced on the Radio City Music Hall stage, moderated panels including at SXSW and Tribeca Film Festival, and guest lectured for NYU and Elon University. I was also selected for the Poynter Leadership Academy for Women In Digital Media Fellowship in 2019.

I mentor young women in high school and college through Girls Write Now and young professionals through  Digital Women's Leaders. You can set up mentorship calls with me through the Digital Women Leaders program or directly on calendly.  I also occasionally make earrings you can buy on Etsy.
